Film Schedule for Tales of Europe

July 12-18

Tales of Europe returns to Chatham for the second year with a lively and provocative series of five feature-length and seven short award-winning films made by European filmmakers who journey to Greenland, Morocco and Myanmar to tell their tales. Each of these noteworthy films debuted over the last year in top international festivals such as Berlin, Cannes, Sundance and Toronto. The Crandell Theatre has exclusive rights to show the films for the first time in the tri-state area (NY, MA, CT). The films were curated by Laurence (Larry) Kardish, co-artistic director of the Crandell’s annual film festival FilmColumbia and former senior curator for film at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Special Sensory Friendly Screening of Avengers: Endgame, Sunday, May 12 at 2:30pm

Sensory Friendly Films are a special opportunity for individuals living with autism and others to enjoy films in a safe and accepting environment. Lights in the theatre are turned slightly up (dim lights will remain on) and the sound is turned slightly down. Audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout, sing, or do anything they feel they need to do in order to be comfortable–unless the safety of the audience is in question. Many others, not on the autism spectrum, may also enjoy Sensory Friendly Films as they provide an opportunity for families to meet, for siblings of children with autism to get to know other children, and to enjoy a movie in a climate of acceptance and understanding. Free Screening: 2019 After School Filmmaking Project

Saturday, May 18

The premiere community screening of three short films produced by area student filmmakers takes place at the Crandell Theatre in Chatham, NY, on Saturday, May 18, at noon. The films  were created and produced by students from Chatham, Hudson, and Germantown public schools as part of the Crandell Theatre 2019 After School Filmmaking Project (ASFP). A Q&A with the student filmmakers and their filmmaker mentor follows the screening. The event is free to the public. Middle and high school students in Columbia County have been participating in the filmmaking project since its start in 2000. The curriculum pairs a professional filmmaker mentor with students to cover all phases of film creation and production. With mentors taking the students through the basics of how to make a short film, the group works collaboratively to develop a story concept, write a script,…
