Chatham’s Big Screen Will Soon Have Little Sister

Excerpted from the September 28 edition of the Columbia Paper. The Village Planning Board met for a special meeting Monday, September 23 to review and approve the plans for a new single screen movie theater at 4 Depot Square, currently a vacant lot. The new building that will house the movie theater, faces the historic train station and sits next to the Herrington’s building supply store, will be built by Jack Shear and run by the Crandell Theatre. The Crandell, a 534 seat single screen movie theater at 48 Main Street, is owned by a not-for-profit organization. Read the entire article.

Crandell Theatre Board Member Judy Grunberg Dies

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Judy Grunberg, a beloved board member and benefactor of the Crandell. Judy’s generous gift helped save the Crandell in 2010, and she continued to be a major supporter of both the theatre and the community of Chatham throughout the rest of her life. Though she will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her, Judy’s legacy remains strong, not just here at the Crandell, but at the Blue Plate, ReWraps, PS21, and the many other local and area organizations that she loved and supported. Here’s lookin’ at you, kid!

Voted Best Local Movie Theatre – Again!

On Thursday, June 27 the Best of Columbia County Awards were presented at PS21 in Chatham. For the fifth year in a row, The Crandell was voted “Best Local Movie Theatre” in Columbia County. Thank you to everyone who voted for us! For the past six years, the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce and Columbia-Greene Media have hosted this event in celebration of Columbia County’s “Best Of.” The awards are chosen by the public after two rounds of voting. The Crandell has received this honor every year since 2014 when the Best of Columbia County’s Award was established. Below concessions and box office staffer Steve Ulmer and office manager Dawn Steward accept the award. Concessions staffer Shari Tessitore and theatre manager Matt Converse proudly display the award.

Film Schedule for Tales of Europe

July 12-18

Tales of Europe returns to Chatham for the second year with a lively and provocative series of five feature-length and seven short award-winning films made by European filmmakers who journey to Greenland, Morocco and Myanmar to tell their tales. Each of these noteworthy films debuted over the last year in top international festivals such as Berlin, Cannes, Sundance and Toronto. The Crandell Theatre has exclusive rights to show the films for the first time in the tri-state area (NY, MA, CT). The films were curated by Laurence (Larry) Kardish, co-artistic director of the Crandell’s annual film festival FilmColumbia and former senior curator for film at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.
