Multi-hyphenate (actress-director-writer-producer) Sarah Polly’s starry Women Talking makes The Handmaid’s Tale feel like a Disney film. Set in a patriarchal Mennonite community and based on actual events, learning to read and write are forbidden to women, who are routinely raped by their husbands, brothers, and sons, and gaslit to believe they are the victims of ghosts. Women Talking made a sensation when it premiered at Telluride.
