Do nothing. Stay and fight. Or leave. In 2010, the women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling a brutal reality with their faith. Director Sarah Polley adapted her screenplay from a novel by Miriam Toews, whose own Mennonite past informs this powerful story. Polley creates an expansive, cinematic space in which Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Ben Wishaw, Frances McDormand (who also produces) and several newcomers consider the difficult choices that will forever change their lives.
Nominated for 2 Oscars: Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture
