Kira Kovalenko’s sophomore feature won the “Un Certain Regard” award at Cannes this year. Set in a mining town in North Ossetia, it’s a bold and assured film about a young woman, Ada, virtually imprisoned by her widowed father. Her younger brother relies on her to the extent that he calls her “Mom,” but it is her older brother who works in nearby Rostov that she looks to for salvation
