Five years ago, an Icelandic fishing trawler caught four reels of a 35mm film in its North Sea net. Sent to a lab the reels turned out to be from a popular 1969 Soviet film, The Village Detective directed by Ivan Lukinsky. Bill Morrison, a filmmaker who finds beauty in motion picture decomposition, “rescued” the reels and set their flickering images to Pulitzer-prize winning composer David Lang’s haunting score.  A New York Times Critics Pick.
