Set in 1981 in rural Ireland, this stunning debut from director Colm Bairéad tells the story of a neglected girl sent away from her dysfunctional family to live with older Gaelic-speaking relatives she’s never met. Slowly, in the care of this gentle couple, the alienated, inward Cáit blossoms and discovers a new way of living. When she uncovers a secret about her foster family that threatens to destroy their relationship, Cáit proves she can be as compassionate and caring as they are. Catherine Clinch, who was 12 when the film was shot, is luminous in the titular role. A NYT Critic’s Pick.
