Celebrated director/producer Steven Spielberg, pioneer of the modern blockbuster, finds his allegorical Rosebud moment in this semi-autobiographical story about his evolution as a filmmaker. The director’s avatar, Sammy Fabelman, is the Jewish son of a concert pianist and hard-working electrical engineer, not unlike Spielberg’s own parents. Growing up in post-WWII Arizona, he becomes increasingly comfortable behind the camera, documenting his developing inspirations and obsessions through the stories he constructs. He soon discovers that his films do more than just break down barriers; they also reveal startling truths about his family.
