SLY LIVES! (aka the Burden of Black Genius) is director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s follow up to his wildly successful and Oscar-winning documentary Summer of Soul. His new film, produced once more by Oscar-winner Joseph Patel, shines a spotlight on the life and legacy of Sly and the Family Stone, telling the story behind the rise, reign and fadeout of one of pop music’s most influential artists. Dozens of cultural legends weigh in on just how this underappreciated musical genius set the tone for popular music to come. This is a rare opportunity to see the documentary theatrically on the big screen.

“Melodically vital and bracingly frank, Questlove’s uptempo Sundance documentary is a sonic kick to the soul.” — Robert Daniels, RogerEbert.com
“Jammed with penetrating interviews and extraordinary archival footage, Sly Lives! is a movie that knows how to take the time to meditate on what it’s showing you. Yet much of it flashes by in a kaleidoscopic way that tickles our eyes and ears.” — Owen Gleiberman, Variety
