On November 27, 2017, after 91 years, New York’s Cabaret Law was finally repealed allowing dancing in bars where alcohol was served. Cristina Kallas’s Slamdance award-winning film is set on that November day in Harlem’s legendary Paris Bar where jazz musicians hang out and improvise. Using a split screen to tell multiple stories and featuring an extraordinary jazz score, Kallas follows a motley group of talented and hopeful barflies. The result is a wondrous New York film.
