This year’s coveted Golden Bear, the Berlin Film Festival’s highest honor, went to a film about a boat, the Adamant, moored permanently on the Seine in the center of Paris. Resembling a cross between a Mississippi steamboat and an alien craft covered with louvered windows, the Adamant is, in fact, a day-care center for mentally challenged adults—part art studio, library, performance space, and screening room—whose visitors curate their own film festivals. As Peter Bradshaw wrote in The Guardian, “There is enormous warmth, sympathy and human curiosity in this film.”
