“Writing, of course, is a substitute for the life I cannot live, am unable to live,” wrote Patricia Highsmith in her unpublished journals, brought to life by actor Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) in this biography of the celebrated author. Her intricately plotted thrillers and character studies held many pieces of her own double life, recounted here by lovers and friends. Adapted by Hitchcock and dozens of other filmmakers, many during her lifetime, her work includes The Price of Salt, the first lesbian novel with a happy ending published in the 1950s. It was later released as Carol under her own name and adapted into the acclaimed Todd Haynes film.

“Ultimately, Loving Highsmith provides a valuable addition to the larger record of the author’s enigmatic life.” — Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
