Writer/director Park Chan-wook says he made his latest film, this smart and challenging murder mystery, expressly for adults. More in the manner of a classic film noir than the taboo-breaking, neo-noir thrillers (Oldboy, The Handmaiden, Stoker) he is known for, Decision to Leave has fun twisting familiar tropes into something unexpected. A detective investigating a remote murder, a mysterious widow and the obsessive cat-and-mouse game the two play is only the starting point in this longer view of obsession and grief. “Rather than tell the story of loss as something tragic, I tried to express it with subtlety, elegance and humor,” says Park, who won best director at Cannes this year.

“One of the many pleasures of the feverish Decision to Leave is that the director Park Chan-wook clearly had as much fun making the movie as you will have watching it.” — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
