On August 7th, 2018, the New York Times restaurant critic, Pete Wells, gave a two-star Critic’s Pick review to a new Lower East Side restaurant. The headline read, “At Gem, a Teen Wonder plays in the Big Leagues”. That teen wonder is Chef Flynn McGarry who at age 19 has been creating exciting menus and meals for ten years. Tired of his parents’ reliance on take-out, Flynn began to cook at 10 and he did so well that his parents outfitted his bedroom with a kitchen. Cameron Yates documents with discretion and humor Flynn’s bumpy road to adulthood and stardom.
