HOLLYWOOD SUMMER NIGHTS

Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman bring the angst, tension and chemistry to the big screen in this sublimely perfect wartime thriller. Bogart plays Rick Blaine, a cynical world-weary ex-patriate who runs a nightclub in Casablanca, Morocco, during the early stages of WWII. Rick’s cafe has become a kind of haven for refugees seeking illicit letters that will help them escape the Nazis and flee to America. But when his former lover Ilsa (Bergman) and her husband, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), show up, Rick must face one excruciating final decision. Claude Rains, as a Vichy French captain with hidden motives, gives what many consider his finest performance.

“Curtiz’s film is a classic for a reason — it’s crafted with the precision, detail and beauty of a Fabergé egg; the dialogue is hauntingly memorable and, in Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, it has one of the most magnetic screen pairings in history.” — Wendy Ide, The Times (UK)
“Nobody lights a torch like Ingrid Bergman’s Ilsa or carries one like Humphrey Bogart’s Rick.” — Michael Wilmington, The Chicago Tribune
