In 1990, the Kanesatake Indian reservation on Montreal’s South Shore defied the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with a two-month, sometimes violent, standoff protesting the building of a golf course on sacred burial lands. Tracey Deer, a young Mohawk Quebec filmmaker, having lived through these traumatic days, places Beans, her teenage protagonist, in this conflict who follows a quick learning curve about the fractious world around her.
