Based on actual events, Terrence Malick’s magnificent looking new movie is about an obscure peasant farmer who refuses to fight in the German army during World War II. His Christian conscience is not only pitted against Hitler, but also against the local Christian church, which pressures him to serve. It’s a moving a parable for our time.
