FilmColumbia, Crandell Theatre’s signature program, is an annual ten-day festival of world-class films representing major studios, independents, international films, animated features, documentaries and children’s short films. In addition to screening approximately 50 films, the festival also features panels, Q&A sessions with filmmakers and a popular screenwriting workshop.
Curated by film critic and historian Peter Biskind, along with co-artistic director and former senior film curator at MOMA, Laurence Kardish, and run by Festival Manager Calliope Nicholas, FilmColumbia offers a selection of the year’s best films, most of which have earned awards from larger festivals around the world, such as Cannes, Venice, Telluride, New York and Toronto. Most of the screened films, fresh off the festival circuit, go on to win major awards. The following Oscar-winning and nominated films screened at our 2021 festival: Parallel Mothers, The Worst Person in the World, Flee, Julia, and Drive My Car.
FilmColumbia will once again light up the screen on October 21-30, 2022, featuring the very best in national and international films, including new festival-favorite releases from acclaimed directors Darren Aronofsky, Luca Guadagnino, Florian Zeller, and Sarah Polley, and lauded performances from Anne Hathaway, Timothée Chalamet, Tilda Swinton, Anthony Hopkins, Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Sigourney Weaver, Jessie Buckley, and Frances McDormand, among many others.
Special screenings for 2022’s festival include an anniversary tribute to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, introduced by its screenwriter, James Schamus, and just in time for Halloween, a late-night screening of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead in 3D.
