In Rupert Wyatt’s debut feature, Brian Cox plays a convict in prison for life, but when his daughter falls victim of a drug overdose, he realizes he has no choice but to bust out of jail to see her. What would have been a tired genre film in anybody else’s hands, becomes instead an existential mediation on freedom and redemption, while still delivering the genre jolts we expect from a prison escape movie. Once again, Cox transforms an outcast into a sympathetic character. With Billion’s Damian Lewis.
“With his craggy face and melancholy eyes, Cox brings a lived-in world-weariness to Frank. Without lapsing into sentimentality, the actor suggests a deeply buried humanity and vulnerability that even Frank had forgotten he had.” — Jean Oppenheimer, Village Voice
