Captain Marvel had a phenomenal opening weekend, the best of any movie this year, putting it on the list of top twenty opening weekends of all time. It is also the first Marvel movie to be (co-) directed by a woman and only the second to credit female writers. Brie Larson is Captain Marvel, a fighter pilot given her superpowers by a race of aliens. It features some of my favorite actors: not only Larson, but Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn from Bloodline, and Lee Pace from Halt and Catch Fire. Then there’s Jude Law and Annette Bening. —Peter Biskind
“It’s not only heroes who can have superpowers, movies can have them too, and you can add Captain Marvel to the small list of those that do.” — Kenneth Turan, L.A. Times
“Like its tough, smart heroine, Captain Marvel dances to its own beat; it’s an origin story that isn’t structured as an origin story but gets there all the same.” — Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times
“[Boden and Fleck] have brought off something exciting, embracing the Marvel house style and, within that, crafting a tale with enough tricks and moods and sleight-of-hand layers to keep us honestly absorbed.” — Owen Gleiberman, Variety
