Inspired by a true story, The Upside is a heartfelt comedy about a recently paroled ex-convict (Kevin Hart) who strikes up an unusual and unlikely friendship with a paralyzed billionaire (Bryan Cranston). The reviewers hated this movie, much the same way as they hated Green Book, but audiences love it. Directed by Neil Burger and written by Jon Hartmere, The Upside is based on the hit 2011 French film The Intouchables. With a splendid cast including Nicole Kidman and Juliana Margulies.
“Jon Hartmere’s script has genuinely funny moments and is blessedly short on crassness…” — Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times
“Forced to work strictly from the neck up, Cranston is just the right amount of gruff; Hart, aside from a deeply unnecessary catheter scene, gives a gratifyingly prickly and vulnerable performance.” — Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly
“It’s a film that contains complicated, sad, interesting ideas rarely expressed on screen…” — Emily Yoshida, New York Magazine
