When Marty, a bored 10-year-old zebra dreaming of Mother Africa escapes from the Central Park Zoo, Marty’s companions Alex, the content lion; Melman, the skittish giraffe; and Gloria, the resolute hippo, attempt to rescue him. Mayhem in the streets of New York City ensues and they all end up crated and shipped off to a remote wildlife preserve. More high jinks on the high seas result in a surprise landing on the sandy shores of exotic Madagascar, where they all find out what it really means to be a wild animal.
