In traditional Taiwanese culture the left hand belongs to the devil. Five-year-old I-Jing is a lefty who has just moved back to Taipei with her single mother and older sister. When her mother’s new night-market noodle shop hits a rough patch, she thinks her “devil hand” gives her permission to be naughty. American-Taiwanese Director Shih-Ching Tsou, who has produced many of Sean Baker’s films, shot her debut feature on an iPhone, like Baker’s Tangerine, breezily capturing the bustle and energy of the metropolis and the intimacies of ever-changing family life. From a script co-written with Baker, Left-Handed Girl is Taiwan’s official entry to the 2026 Academy Awards.
