This very dark New York story, adapted from Hubert Selby Jr.’s seminal 1964 novel, is an international co-production between Germany, the U.S. and the UK. German director Uli Edel weaves his dovetailing stories of unionizing laborers, sex workers and drag queens to create a frank, searing portrait of the underworld in working-class 1950s Brooklyn. Stephen Lang plays the heartbreaking Harry Black, an unlikely strike hero who conceals his sexuality from his wife. Novelist Selby, who also wrote the novel Requiem for a Dream, has a brief cameo as a cab driver.
