A minister’s son educated at the Berkshire School in Sheffield, MA, George Platt Lynes (1907–1955) became one of America’s earliest fashion photographers, adored by society and celebrities. His art, however, was private: he photographed, magnificently and explicitly, the male nude, thousands of them, at a time when he could not exhibit his work nor send it through the US mail. Hidden Master is a buzzy and revelatory documentary about a man whose passion was ahead of its time, and whose work now resides in museums, private collections, and the Kinsey Institute in Indiana.
