Thandiwe Newton plays a professor and transplant in rural Montana who enjoys the distance and isolation that her canyon home provides from her job at a small nearby college. She’s content in her solitude and her habits until two hunters, who claim they’re only passing through, start to circle. A battle of wills ensues, and Newton’s character digs in with a steely edge that is marvelous to watch. The debut feature from former television director Julian Higgins (House), the film was adapted from his award-winning 2015 short, Winter Light.
“Higgins has a feel for the poetry of the landscape, and he and his cinematographer, Andrew Wheeler, make effective use of the region’s majestic, sometimes eerie beauty.” — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
