Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes, the latest from brilliant Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki showcases his trademark blend of crisp visuals, dark humor, and piercing observation. In modern-day Helsinki, two lonely souls in search of love meet by chance in a karaoke bar. This quirky tale of star-crossed lovers, who could be classic movie stars in another life, is a life-affirming gem, despite the steady and darkly humorous stream of obstacles in their way. But everything from lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, a charming stray dog and alcoholism can’t keep them apart. Classic movie references (and a few surprises, including the locally filmed Jim Jarmusch film The Dead Don’t Die) make artful appearances. The film was a FilmColumbia23 selection.
“Drolly scripted, impeccably designed and photographed, and played to succinct perfection, this may only be a slender drama, but it’s also a cherishable summation of what makes Aki Kaurismäki special.” — David Parkinson, Empire Magazine
“If you’re someone who has yet to see a Kaurismäki film and you’re also a fan of Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite, Poor Things), I think you’ll enjoy this vibe.” — Amy Nicholson, NPR Los Angeles
