Iconic filmmaker Wes Anderson heads deep into the desert of our atomic past with his latest film about a Junior Stargazer convention that is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events. The overstuffed cast of Anderson regulars, including Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Steve Park, Jeffrey Wright, Edward Norton, Willem Defoe, Tony Revolari and Adrien Brody are joined by Scarlett Johansson (in her first live-action role for the director), Maya Hawke, Matt Dillon, Steve Carrell, Tom Hanks and Bryan Cranston. Hong Chau and Margot Robbie even drop in for brief cameos. Alternately in black-and-white and a glorious 1940s New Mexican color palette straight out of Anderson’s toolbox, the film premiered at Cannes and was nominated for the Palme D’Or.
“There has always been a method to Wes Anderson’s madness, but Asteroid City reminds you that there is also a madness to his method. And that, ultimately, is what makes him a great artist.” — Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine
